Formula & How It Works

Length Conversion Formula

result = value × (fromFactor ÷ toFactor)

Every unit has a conversion factor expressed in meters. The value is normalized to meters (value × fromFactor), then divided by the target unit's factor to get the final result.

Miles to Kilometers

km = miles × (1609.344 ÷ 1000)

1 mile is defined as exactly 1609.344 meters, so converting to kilometers means multiplying by the mile factor and dividing by 1000 (meters per kilometer).

Nautical Miles

1 nautical mile = 1852 meters

A nautical mile is based on one minute of arc of latitude and is used in aviation and maritime navigation.

Practical Examples & Common Use Cases

Converting miles to kilometers for a road trip

5 miles × (1609.344 ÷ 1000) = 5 × 1.609344 = 8.04672 km.

Converting a height in centimeters to feet

180 cm × (0.01 ÷ 0.3048) = 180 × 0.032808 ≈ 5.906 ft (about 5 ft 11 in).

Converting nautical miles to statute miles for flight planning

100 nautical miles × (1852 ÷ 1609.344) ≈ 115.08 miles.

Frequently Asked Questions

There are approximately 3.28084 feet in one meter. Conversely, one foot equals exactly 0.3048 meters. This relationship was internationally agreed upon in 1959.

Multiply the number of kilometers by 0.621371 to get miles. For a quick estimate, you can multiply by 0.6. For example, 10 km is approximately 6.21 miles.

A nautical mile equals 1,852 meters (approximately 1.151 regular miles). It is based on one minute of arc of latitude along any meridian and is used in air and sea navigation.

The metric system was developed in France during the 1790s for scientific consistency. Imperial units evolved from older English measurement traditions. Most countries now use metric, but the US, Liberia, and Myanmar still primarily use imperial units.
