How UK Income Tax Works
The UK uses a progressive income tax system with multiple bands. For the 2024/25 tax year:
- Personal Allowance: £12,570 (tax-free, reduced if income exceeds £100,000)
- Basic Rate: 20% on income from £12,571 to £50,270
- Higher Rate: 40% on income from £50,271 to £125,140
- Additional Rate: 45% on income over £125,140
National Insurance contributions (Class 1) are also deducted: 8% on earnings between £12,570 and £50,270, and 2% on earnings above that.
