Formula & How It Works
Grand Total Spending
Grand Total = Sum of all logged expense amountsEvery expense you add is summed to produce the running total shown at the bottom of the Spending Summary.
Category Total
Category Total = Sum of amounts for expenses tagged with that categoryExpenses are grouped by category to show which areas consume the most money.
Category Bar Width
Bar Width % = (Category Total ÷ Grand Total) × 100The bar length next to each category is proportional to its share of total spending, making it easy to spot your biggest expense areas at a glance.
Practical Examples & Common Use Cases
Example 1: A week of grocery and dining expenses
You log "Weekly groceries, $128.50, Groceries", "Coffee shop, $6.25, Dining Out", and "Gas, $42.00, Transportation". The Grand Total updates to $176.75, with Groceries showing 73% of the week's spending.
Example 2: Spotting a spending pattern
After logging 15 entries over two weeks, the Spending Summary shows Dining Out at $210 out of a $650 grand total — roughly 32%, prompting a decision to cook at home more often.
Example 3: Filtering by category
Clicking the "Entertainment" filter button shows only entertainment expenses (e.g., $15 movie ticket, $45 concert ticket), letting you quickly total that category without manual addition.
Frequently Asked Questions
No. All data stays in your browser memory and is cleared when you close or refresh the page. Nothing is sent to any server. For permanent records, note down your totals before leaving.
Use the category that best matches each expense. The most common are Groceries, Dining Out, Transportation, and Utilities. If nothing fits, choose "Other". The summary shows spending per category so you can spot patterns.
For the best results, log expenses as they happen or at the end of each day. The more consistently you track, the more accurate your spending picture becomes.
