How Canadian Income Tax Works

Canada uses a progressive tax system at both the federal and provincial levels. Your total income tax is the sum of federal and provincial taxes.

The 2024 federal tax brackets for Canada are:

  • 15% on the first C$55,867
  • 20.5% on C$55,867 to C$111,733
  • 26% on C$111,733 to C$154,906
  • 29% on C$154,906 to C$220,000
  • 33% on income over C$220,000

In addition to income tax, employees pay CPP (Canada Pension Plan) contributions of 5.95% on employment income between C$3,500 and C$68,500, and EI (Employment Insurance) premiums of 1.66% on insurable earnings up to C$63,200.

Note: Provincial tax rates vary. This calculator uses a simplified flat provincial rate for estimation. Consult the CRA for exact figures.
